((WHAT SUN NONE OF YOU EVER TAKE OFF YOUR HELMETS))

[The ship isn't on the agenda, because Blood Gulch doesn't have an agenda. The little box canyon probably wasn't the shuttle's first choice--it's no one's first choice--but a plume of smoke trails behind the ship, black and foreboding. The stricken craft streaks in at a shallow angle, haloed in the hot orange glow of reentry as the pilot bleeds velocity into the atmosphere.

Then, of course, it crashes.

A cryopod AI is so dumb it almost doesn't deserve the distinction of being called an AI, but is also too dumb to resent the fact. Instead, it churns through its disaster recovery procedures, notices a number of things that shouldn't be on fire are unfortunately on fire, decides that its passenger would be safer awake, and lacking the capacity to second-guess itself, immediately triggers the thaw cycle.

Even with state-of-the-art tech, it takes a few minutes to bring someone up from a hair above absolute zero, and Catherine Halsey gets that much of a reprieve from having to deal with anyone in Blood Gulch.]
